Enhance Your ECTs’ Mathematical Teaching Skills: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics ECT Primary Phase 1 Work Group Support your Early Career Teachers (ECTs) in building the key skills needed to teach mathematics effectively through our SKTM ECT Primary Phase 1 Work Group.

Tailored for first-year ECTs, this programme is delivered across four full days of face-to-face sessions throughout the academic year. It focuses on deepening both mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogical expertise, equipping teachers to excel in the classroom.

Led by Victoria Wilson, an accredited PD Lead with the NCETM, this programme will equip your teachers with the tools to:

- Deepen their understanding of Number Sense and how it underpins pupils' mathematical development.

- Explore adaptive teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of their learners.

- Identify and address areas of specific need within their own cohorts, fostering a more responsive approach to teaching.

This programme not only aligns with the Early Career Framework but provides your ECTs with a subject-specific focus that goes beyond the statutory offer, empowering them to become more confident and reflective maths teachers. By investing in this CPD, your school will ensure that ECTs develop a solid foundation in mathematical teaching, benefiting both their professional growth and student outcomes.

Who can take part?

Participants will be those identified as Early Career Teachers – teachers in their first or second year of teaching.

What is involved?

Whilst recognising the requirements of the Early Career Framework, this programme provides a subject-specific focus for the ECT that enhances the statutory offer, with a focus on the teaching of maths. This is situated in the context of two core mathematical concepts: Number sense, and Additive and multiplicative reasoning.

The programme strikes a balance between developing teachers’ maths subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, alongside classroom practice to support the learning of maths. Participants will attend the equivalent of up to four days of sessions, focusing between sessions on the use of tasks in the classroom.

What will you learn?

  • Your pupils will be seen to elaborate when responding to questions, showing that their answer stems from a secure understanding
  • You will evaluate and adapt existing resources to enable them to be used to meet the needs of pupils
  • You will develop an understanding of approaches to assess pupils’ prior learning, so that learning sequences are planned to take this into account

What is the cost?

The SKTM Primary Early Career Teachers Programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
