SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS (SECONDARY NON-SPECIALIST TEACHERS) PROGRAMME
Quote from a recent participant
"I think the course has been incredibly insightful and has given me confidence in a wide range of areas of maths that I teach. As a non-specialist, I have been worrying about the best way to teach something and the course has helped a lot (alongside the NCETM resources available online). It has also helped me feel more confident for observations. I really like the fact that we are never 'put on the spot' in our sessions - I think there is quite a range of abilities in the group, but I feel everyone is very supportive of each other. I like the fact that there is no competitive element and I will try my best to copy this supported, positive take on maths in my lessons."
This project is designed to support non-specialist teachers teaching maths in a secondary school in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support students in maths in the classroom. It replaces the earlier TSST programme.
If you are a headteacher or senior leader, and want to know more about the programme and its suitability for teachers in your school, watch this video.
Who can take part?
This programme is for non-specialist teachers of mathematics working in state-funded schools. A non-specialist teacher is someone who is currently teaching, or has a commitment from their headteacher to teach some mathematics within the next year, and who has either:
- trained as a teacher in a subject other than mathematics, or
- trained overseas and meets the UK’s QTS requirements – please check the guidance
What is involved?
There are significant numbers of people teaching maths in secondary schools without specialist initial teacher training. This programme supports non-specialist teachers in developing the specialist knowledge (the blend of subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge) required for teaching maths..
It is designed to take place over the equivalent of six days.
What will you learn?
- Your students will think, reason and discuss their maths in order to deepen their understanding
- You will explore and increase your use of a range of pedagogic approaches aligned to the principles of teaching for mastery
- You will develop your subject and curriculum knowledge of secondary maths
